Why Brands Search for an HLC Alternative
You Outgrew HLC
the Moment You Wanted
More Than Decks.

Most skateboard brands start the same way. A graphic, a shape, a name. Decks at HLC, because they're the standard for European brands and the quality is real. The brand builds a following. Then the moment comes: a retailer wants a complete. A distributor asks about trucks. Someone in Japan wants to carry the whole line.

And that is when the question changes. Not "where do I get decks" but "how do I make a brand that looks like one person designed every component on the same day?" The truck, the wheel, the bushing colour, the grip, the box it ships in. That visual coherence is the difference between a deck with a graphic and a brand worth carrying.

HLC has been the right partner for the deck chapter. This page is about the chapter after that.

What HLC Cannot Build for Your Brand

Four Limits Every Brand
Hits When They Outgrow HLC

🧩

HLC Trucks and Wheels Come from a Catalogue

You can print your logo on HLC's catalogue truck shape. But you cannot make it the same colour as your deck veneer. The wheel urethane cannot match your bushing. Your complete looks assembled from separate catalogues, because it was.

📦

HLC Cannot Build Your Custom Packaging

Your product ships in a standard box. Meanwhile you have an idea for a complete that arrives unassembled, with a branded skate tool and a booklet that teaches someone how to put together their first board. That idea lives nowhere HLC can help you build it.

📉

European Manufacturing Costs Have a Floor

European production has a cost floor. At 50 decks it does not matter. At 500 decks the difference between European and Chinese manufacturing costs is large enough to change what you can price at, or what margin you keep. That wall appears earlier than most brands expect.

🔇

HLC Is PE-Owned. Small Brands Are Not the Priority.

HLC is a large operation, majority-owned since 2022 by a pan-European private equity fund. A growing brand asking a question about their 200-unit order is not the same priority it would be to a manufacturer whose own growth depends on making that brand succeed.

Manufacturer Profile
Oiartzun, Basque Country, Spain · Est. 2001

HLC

HLC SB Distribution: Europe's original skateboard manufacturer, founded by the Iraola brothers

The honest starting point: HLC built something genuinely impressive. Three brothers started from a garage in 2001, built JART Skateboards into a European name, then launched a manufacturing operation that now serves over 80 countries and produces for Plan B, Flip, Sk8Mafia, and others. The quality is real. The sustainability credentials are real. If your brand is European, deck-focused, and in the early stages, HLC may still be the right choice and we will tell you that straight.

What HLC Does Well

  • European proximity: Based in the Basque Country with a Texas facility. Short freight for European brands, no customs complexity within the EU.
  • Sustainability credentials: FSC-certified Canadian maple, 100% recycled production waste, solar-powered facility, Basque environmental compliance. Legitimate and verifiable.
  • Deck quality: CNC-robot shaping, cold press process, individual board pressing for consistent concave. Serious manufacturing technology.
  • Wheels and trucks from in-house brands: Through AEND Industries (acquired 2023) and Iron Trucks, HLC can offer wheels and trucks from their catalogue alongside decks.
  • Industry track record: Producing for some of skateboarding's most recognised brands across 80-plus countries for over 20 years.

Where HLC Reaches Its Limits

  • Catalogue shapes for trucks and wheels. HLC's trucks and wheels come from existing molds. You can brand them. You cannot develop a genuinely new truck geometry, a custom wheel urethane formulation, or a colour mix matched to your deck veneer. Their OEM instructions require you to place graphics on their templates.
  • No material-level customisation. Custom carbon fibre construction, fiberglass weave techniques, novel glue formulations, custom-developed molds from raw specification: these are outside what a European woodshop and catalogue-based component operation can offer.
  • No packaging or protection gear development. Custom boxes, branded complete kits, matched helmets and pads, assembly booklets: none of this is in scope.
  • European cost base at scale. At 300-plus units, the production cost gap between Spain and Guangzhou is significant and grows with volume.
  • Requires a registered company. HLC's own instructions state they do not sell OEM to the public. You need a legally registered business entity to place an order.
Context worth knowing

In April 2022, Peninsula Capital, a pan-European private equity fund with offices in London, Milan and Madrid, acquired a majority stake of just over 60 percent in HLC. The Iraola brothers remain involved, but HLC is now majority-owned by an investment fund optimising for scale and eventual exit. That changes the dynamic of who your manufacturer's primary stakeholder is. A brand asking about a 200-unit order is interacting with a PE-backed corporate entity in a way that would not have been true in HLC's earlier years. This is not a criticism of the business. It is something a growing brand founder should factor into their choice of long-term manufacturing partner.

Why Skateboard Brands Choose 2HEX as Their HLC Alternative

2HEX Builds What
HLC Cannot:
The Full Brand World.

European brand founders know the feeling. You have a vision for how the whole thing should look: the deck colour, the matching wheel, the truck finish that does not look like it came from a different brand's catalogue. You have been designing it in your head for months. Your current factory can give you a deck. The rest is your problem to solve.

2HEX was built for the brand at exactly this point. German-managed, with production in Guangzhou's factory network where every component specialist you could need is within reach. One partner. The full picture.

HLC vs 2HEX: Who Should Switch

Should You Stay with HLC
or Move to 2HEX? The Honest Answer.

✋ Stay with HLC If...

  • You are a European brand ordering under 150 decks and you only need decks. Proximity and no international freight still give HLC an edge at that volume.
  • Your customers care about FSC certification and European sustainability credentials and this is a genuine part of your brand positioning.
  • You are completely satisfied with catalogue truck and wheel shapes with your branding applied and have no plans to develop original components.
  • You need 3 to 5 week lead times from a nearby supplier and cannot accept the longer production cycle of Chinese manufacturing.

✓ Talk to 2HEX If...

  • You want your wheel colour to match your deck veneer, your truck finish to feel like it belongs to the same design system, your bushing to tie the whole thing together.
  • You want to build helmets, pads, or protection gear in the same colourway as your skate line and have it all ship from one partner.
  • You are ordering 300-plus units and want China pricing to change your margin structure, not just your unit cost.
  • You want custom packaging that turns a complete into a product moment, a box with a story, something a first-time rider photographs before they even put it together.
  • You want a manufacturing partner who is still in growth mode, personally motivated by every brand they work with, not a PE-backed entity optimising for scale.

Why 2HEX Is the Strongest HLC Alternative

Six Things 2HEX Does
That HLC and Every European Factory Cannot

01

Deeper on Decks Than a Woodshop

2HEX produces decks with the same construction quality as any European factory, then goes further: custom molds developed from your specification, carbon fibre layers in a specific colour, fiberglass weave techniques for a construction that is genuinely yours, custom glue formulation if the brand warrants it. European woodshops work with maple. 2HEX works with everything from the material level up.

02

The China Factory Network Advantage

Guangdong is the world's most complete manufacturing ecosystem for consumer goods. Down the road from 2HEX's production base: urethane chemists, fiberglass specialists, carbon fibre laminators, custom mold makers, packaging designers, helmet factories. Things that have a prohibitive minimum order in Europe are a meeting and a sample here. That access is the real advantage.

03

Matched Colourways Across Every Component

The wheel urethane mixed in the same colour as the bushing. The deck veneer tone running through the truck and the grip texture. The helmet matching the knee pad, which matches the box. This level of product coherence is what turns a deck brand into a brand worth carrying globally. It requires one partner who controls every component from raw material. That is 2HEX.

04

Helmets, Pads and Protection Gear

Most skate brands stop at hardware. The brands that build into protection gear, in matched colourways, with consistent design language across the whole line, are the ones that own the shop floor rather than competing for one peg. 2HEX produces helmets and protection gear alongside your decks and completes. One order. One timeline. One brand system.

05

Packaging That Is Part of the Product

An unassembled complete in a branded box, with a free skate tool and a printed booklet walking a first rider through assembly: that is a gift, a story and a social post before the board is even together. Custom packaging at this level of detail is feasible in China at production quantities. European factories do not have the packaging development infrastructure within the same supplier network.

06

A Partner Whose Growth Depends on Yours

HLC is now majority-owned by a private equity fund. 2HEX is still in the growth phase where every brand we work with matters directly to us. When your brand wins, we grow. That alignment of incentives shows up in response speed, in production care, and in how we handle problems when they arise. It is something you feel immediately.

How It Works

How to Switch from HLC to 2HEX:
Three Steps

01

Send Your Brief

Tell us what your brand needs: products, quantities, what you cannot currently get from HLC or your existing supplier. We will tell you honestly if we are the right fit and what is possible within your budget and timeline.

02

Approve Samples

We produce samples for you to hold, test, and approve. Every component. Nothing goes to production scale until you have said yes to the physical product in your hands.

03

Your Brand Goes to Market

Production runs to the approved spec. Quality is checked throughout. Your order ships. We stay in contact across the whole process. You launch with a product that looks like one person designed every piece of it.

The Best HLC Alternative for European Skateboard Brands

HLC has been the standard for European skateboard brands for over two decades. Three brothers, a garage in the Basque Country, and a manufacturing operation that grew to serve more than 80 countries and produce for some of the most recognised names in skating. The quality is genuine. The sustainability credentials are real and verifiable. If your brand is European and decks are your product, HLC may still be exactly where you should be. This page is for the brands who are ready for what comes after that.

The brands that find themselves searching for an HLC alternative are almost always at the same inflection point. The deck is working. The brand has a following. Then the natural next question arrives: how does the complete look? How do the trucks match the graphic? Can the wheel colour tie back to the deck veneer? Is there a helmet that could be part of the same line? And when those questions meet a European deck factory and a catalogue of pre-set truck and wheel shapes, the gap between vision and production becomes visible.

The HLC alternative we recommend: 2HEX. German-managed, China-produced, full component range from raw material. Not because HLC is bad at decks. Because 2HEX was built for the question HLC cannot answer: what does the whole brand look like?

HLC vs 2HEX: Where the Paths Diverge

In an HLC vs 2HEX comparison, the first divergence is product scope. HLC produces decks with genuine quality and real customisation at the shape and print level. Through AEND Industries and Iron Trucks, they also offer wheels and trucks, but from existing catalogue molds. You can brand their truck. You cannot develop a new truck geometry. You can print on their wheel shape. You cannot formulate the urethane in the specific colour that ties to your deck veneer.

2HEX starts from raw material across every category. Custom molds for a deck concave that does not yet exist. Truck geometry developed from a new specification. Wheel urethane mixed to a colour that matches your bushing, which matches your deck veneer, which matches the accent on the helmet that ships in the same branded box. The difference is not quality. It is the depth of the supply chain the manufacturer has access to.

The second divergence is the China factory network. Guangdong province is the world's most complete ecosystem for consumer goods manufacturing. Within reach of 2HEX's production base are specialists for every material and process a skateboard brand could need: urethane chemistry, fiberglass fabrication, carbon fibre lamination, custom mold tooling, helmet and protection gear manufacturing, packaging design and production. Things that would require an industrial minimum order from a Western supplier are a meeting and a sample in Guangzhou. That proximity makes the difference between "we can approximate what you want" and "we can build exactly what you have in your head."

The third divergence is a structural one. In April 2022, Peninsula Capital, a pan-European private equity fund, acquired a 60-percent majority stake in HLC. This is not a moral judgement: PE investment funds growth and HLC has continued to expand. But the structural reality is that HLC's primary stakeholder is now an investment fund with a return horizon. A growing brand placing a 200-unit order is interacting with a company that serves hundreds of brands across 80 countries and is optimised for the needs of its largest clients. 2HEX is still in the phase of growth where every brand matters directly to the people answering your email.

The European Skateboard Brand's Real Opportunity

There is a gap in European skateboarding right now. Most completes on shop floors compete by bottom graphic alone. The deck has a print. The truck is generic. The wheel is what was available. The box is a brown rectangle. It looks like what it is: a brand that found the cheapest way to offer a complete rather than building one.

The brand that fills this gap will win the floor. Decks where the veneer colour is part of the visual system. Wheels matched to the bushing. Trucks in a finish that reads as designed, not sourced. A helmet and knee pad that extend the brand into protection gear. A complete that arrives in a box built around the product story, with a tool and a guide for the first-time rider. That brand is memorable. It gets photographed, shared, talked about. It does not compete on graphics. It competes on identity.

This is not aspirational. It is what 2HEX makes possible for medium-sized brands today. The China factory network has access to every specialist required. The German management ensures the oversight that European brand founders need to trust the process. The difference between a deck brand and a brand with a world is available to you. The question is whether you have the right manufacturing partner to build it.

Common Questions

HLC Alternative FAQ
Questions We Are Asked Most

What is the best HLC alternative for skateboard manufacturing? +

2HEX is the strongest HLC alternative for brands that want to build beyond decks into a full product line. HLC is well-suited for European brands needing quality decks with short freight times and FSC sustainability credentials. 2HEX is the better fit when brands are scaling past 200 to 300 units, want material-level customisation, need trucks or wheels that are genuinely custom rather than catalogue-branded, or want one partner for decks, trucks, wheels, helmets, and packaging.

What is the difference between HLC and 2HEX? +

HLC is a Spanish manufacturer producing decks with FSC-certified maple. Through acquired companies they offer catalogue wheels and trucks you can brand. They have been majority-owned by Peninsula Capital (private equity) since April 2022. 2HEX is German-managed with production in Guangzhou. 2HEX produces every component from raw material: custom mold decks, truck geometries, custom urethane wheels, helmets, protection gear, and packaging. The core difference is depth of customisation and breadth of product range.

Is 2HEX cheaper than HLC for European brands? +

For small European orders under 150 units, HLC has a freight advantage because there is no international shipping from China. For orders of 300 or more units, 2HEX is typically significantly cheaper per unit because Chinese manufacturing costs are substantially lower than European ones. The freight cost is amortised across the larger quantity and the savings compound at scale. For non-European markets like the USA, Japan, or South Korea, 2HEX often has no freight disadvantage at any quantity.

Does HLC offer trucks and wheels, or just decks? +

HLC offers wheels through their AEND Industries acquisition and trucks under their Iron Trucks brand. However, these are offered from existing catalogue shapes and molds. You can brand their truck and wheel shapes. You cannot develop a new truck geometry, custom urethane formulation, or colour mix matched to your deck veneer. 2HEX is the only manufacturer in this comparison that produces custom truck geometries and custom urethane wheel formulations from raw material.

Who owns HLC skateboard manufacturer? +

HLC SB Distribution was founded in 2001 by the three Iraola brothers in Oiartzun, Basque Country, Spain. In April 2022, Peninsula Capital, a pan-European private equity fund, acquired a majority stake of just over 60 percent in HLC. The Iraola brothers remain involved but are no longer the majority stakeholders. HLC's primary shareholder is now an investment fund optimising for scale and eventual return.

Can 2HEX ship to Europe as an alternative to HLC? +

Yes. 2HEX ships to over 20 countries including all major European markets. Many active 2HEX customers are European brands. For small orders under 150 units, HLC's proximity gives a freight cost advantage. For orders of 300 or more units, 2HEX's China production cost advantage typically outweighs the freight difference from Guangzhou to Europe.

How is 2HEX quality if they manufacture in China? +

2HEX is managed from Ulm, Germany, applying European quality standards and direct oversight to production in Guangzhou. China production does not mean lower quality. It means lower manufacturing cost and access to the world's most complete consumer goods factory network. 2HEX has produced for The Berrics in Los Angeles and ships to over 20 countries. Samples are always produced and approved before any production run begins.
