Durometer

This is how we measure the urethane hardness of skateboard wheels. Depending on the chemicals mixed together with the urethane, the wheels will have different degrees of hardness ranging from around 75A being the softest to 102A+ being the hardest.

A and B Durometer Scale
Most wheels use a Shore A device, but very hard wheels may use the B scale for greater accuracy. When Shore A reaches its limit at 100A, Shore B is needed. These scales overlap: 100A = 82B, 101A = 83B, 102A = 84B. 84B is around 102A–104A — beyond what Shore A can measure reliably.

Hard Wheels
95A–100A+

Mainly for park and street skating. Hardness helps you slide into position when landing tricks.

  • Easier blunts, slides, powerslides
  • Light weight helps board flip with more control
  • Avoid wheelbite under high impact or sharp turns
  • Sacrifices a smooth ride for trick advantage
  • Harder/smaller wheels catch pebbles and small debris more easily
Soft Wheels
Cruiser / longboard

Great for cruising, skateboard filmers, and longboards — softer = smoother ride.

  • Smooth ride over pebbles and small sticks
  • Maintain speed
  • Reliable grip
  • Usually heavier and larger than hard wheels
  • Below 78A you hit diminishing returns (75A is rare)

Cores

When wheels are soft enough they can press against the bearings and stop your momentum. Soft wheels need a hard core in the middle — this protects the bearings and keeps the ride smooth.

Typical hardness lineup
  • 81B–84B — Ultra Hard
  • 99A–101A — Pro Street / Park
  • 92A–97A — All Terrain
  • 80A–90A — Hybrid / Filmer
  • 75A–78A — Cruiser / Longboard

HR and SHR

High Rebound (HR) and Super High Rebound (SHR) come from how the polyurethane is formed. Drop a wheel from height — the higher it bounces, the higher the rebound. That makes wheels feel more lively and responsive.

HR
High Rebound
  • Urethane is bouncy
  • Returns more energy after compression
  • Rolls faster and feels more lively than standard urethane
  • Cheaper option
SHR
Super High Rebound
  • Even more bouncy
  • Returns even more energy
  • Rolls faster, lasts longer, more flatspot resistant
  • More expensive

Color

Choose any color you’d like. We can also mix special effects into the urethane so they show in the finished product.

  • Color dyed
  • Add 2 colors of dye for a swirl effect
  • Glow in the dark
  • Sparkles
  • Transparent
  • Lights

Molds

First the polyurethane is poured into molds to give the wheel a rough shape. Then the wheels go onto a machine with specific measurements to cut excess urethane and cut threads for traction.

Size

At skate shops you usually see one measurement — a “53mm” wheel is the height (diameter). When we manufacture, we need width, diameter, bearing offset, and surface area. Brands typically publish only the diameter for customers.

Printing

Use our 2HEX wheel design template to send artwork matched to wheel shape and size. Wheel printing uses Pad Printing or UV Printing. Register to download the template.

Skateboard Wheels

Pad Printing

Needs clichés (similar to screens) for each color. We mix ink by hand, pour it into the clichés, and the pad picks up each color layer and presses it onto the wheel.

Skateboard Wheels

UV Printing

For designs with more colors we use a CMYK UV flatbed printer directly on the wheel. More expensive, but higher resolution and much finer detail.

Packing

  • Cardboard wraps — register to download wrap template
  • Shrink wrap in a line, can-shaped, or square
  • Stickers
  • Special ideas and custom packaging — just let us know

Storing Wheels
Once you receive the wheels, store them properly. Keep them away from air and sun — air causes oxidation and sunlight causes discoloration (white wheels turn yellow over time). Best practice: place them in a dark plastic bag and shrink wrap so they stay airproof and lightproof as long as possible.
